Korat pickup driver arrested after elderly cyclist killed

An elderly cyclist was hit and killed by a pickup truck on a dark road in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Phimai district early on Wednesday, police said.

The victim was identified as Wijit Thapa, 66, a resident of Tambon Nai Muang in Phimai. He died shortly after rescuers arrived at the scene on the Phimai bypass road in front of the district office.

The pickup driver, Surachai Sagnuanwong, 24, also a resident of Tambon Nai Muang, waited for police at the scene.

He told them he was driving to the Phimai morning market and failed to see the cyclist ahead of him because the road was dark and the bicycle did not have rear lights.

He was arrested and charged with reckless driving causing death.
