Some of Indoor Stadium Huamark’s fabric roof fell before the 2023 Women’s U25 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship’s beginning on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred at 5pm at the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) site on Ramkhamhaeng Road, 15 minutes before the event’s opening ceremony with 10 countries.
SAT governor Kongsak Yodmanee said some broadcasters were hurt. However, athletes and other participants were still in the stadium corridors, which were evacuated immediately.
Mr. Kongsak said the stadium roof was about 60 years old but had been maintained recently. A heavy rainstorm before the opening ceremony was too much for the edifice.
He stated the SAT would shift the basketball competition to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration-run Bangkok Youth Centre in Din Daeng.
