The U-Tapao Airport’s conversion to an international airport is included in the project’s scope.
According to Reuters, the Thai government will start building the THB290 billion ($8.8 billion) Eastern Aviation City.
The project will see the conversion of U-Tapao Airport, which served the Vietnam War era, into an international airport.
The airport in Rayong will have connections to Suvarnabhumi Airport, Don Muang Airport, and a budget terminal.
A terminal will be part of the project, which will cover 1,040 acres. According to the news agency, it will also have enough room for a free trade zone for freight, an aviation training facility, and aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities.
According to Tipanan Sirichana, a spokeswoman for the Thai government, in the first five years, the project will provide jobs for an additional 15,600 people and boost the country’s aviation sector.
It is a public-private project that will hopefully bring in more visitors to the area.
U-Tapao International Airport is anticipated to be built and developed to accommodate 60 million to 75 million passengers yearly.
‘Eastern Aviation City’s’ master plan will be created by the international design and consulting firm One Works, according to Simple Flying.
In order to provide amusement for all tourists, the airport will also have a Smart Eco Hub Retail area and a Culture Village.
