The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has issued a public warning about a sophisticated online scam involving individuals impersonating police officers to defraud victims.
These impostors, often wearing police uniforms, initiate contact through video chats, falsely claiming they need to collect statements or inform individuals about pending legal charges. Victims are then pressured to transfer money as proof of their innocence, after which the scammers disappear with the funds.
The CIB emphasized that legitimate police procedures do not involve soliciting statements or notifying individuals of charges via messaging apps or video calls. They also stated that real police officers do not request money transfers as proof of innocence and do not send official legal documents, such as summons or arrest warrants, digitally.
To combat this fraudulent activity, the CIB urges the public to report any suspicious interactions via their Facebook page, ensuring complete confidentiality. Alternatively, individuals can contact the Anti-Online Scam Operation Center (AOC) at the hotline 1441. The AOC assists in reporting such crimes and can help freeze bank accounts linked to the suspects.
