An extensive pyrolysis gasoline (pygas) tank exploded and ignited at Map Ta Phut Tank Terminal Co Ltd in Rayong province on Thursday morning.
Emergency responders were notified of the incident at approximately 10.45 am at the Map Ta Phut Terminal operated by SCG Chemicals Plc (SCGC), the petrochemical division of Siam Cement Group (SCG).
Reports indicate that at least three individuals sustained injuries, prompting the evacuation of nearby residents and the temporary suspension of terminal activities.
Footage captured from the site depicted a significant fire engulfing the tank, releasing dense clouds of black smoke.
The impacted tank, located within a cluster of multiple large tanks, is situated at a commercial port and storage facility within Map Ta Phut Port in tambon Map Ta Phut of Rayong’s Muang district. This area is designated for the containment of liquid and gaseous petrochemical substances.
Pygas, a by-product generated during the production of olefins, can serve as a high-octane benzene blending agent or be utilized for aromatic extraction.
