Euro 2024 is set to begin later this month as Germany gears up to host the 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship.
The international football calendar has been more condensed than ever due to the delay of Euro 2020 and the Qatar World Cup moving to last winter. This means the next Euros are already just around the corner.
Germany is ready to host the 2024 edition of UEFA’s flagship international tournament and welcome teams from across Europe. The event will commence later this month, following the conclusion of domestic campaigns in all of Europe’s top leagues.
England will be among the favourites for glory after breezing through qualification, while Scotland will also be participating in the tournament.
Euro 2024 Dates
The tournament will feature 51 games and kick off on Friday, June 14, at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The opening match will see hosts Germany take on Steve Clarke’s Scotland. The group stage will continue until Wednesday, June 26, followed by the knockout stage starting on Saturday, June 29. Euro 2024 will last one month, with the final scheduled for Sunday, July 14, at the 70,000-capacity Olympiastadion in Berlin.
Euro 2024: How the Tournament Works
Twenty-four countries will compete in Euro 2024, including hosts Germany, who will aim for their fourth tournament win. The top two teams from the six groups will advance to the round of 16, joined by the four best third-placed teams. The knockout rounds will progress until the final, with no third-place play-off.
Euro 2024: The Venues
This edition of UEFA’s premier international tournament will be held in Germany, with ten stadiums selected as venues. Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park (BVB Stadion Dortmund), with a capacity of 66,000, will be one such venue. Schalke’s Veltins Arena (Arena AufSchalke) will also be used. While the stadiums are spread out, Germany’s excellent rail network will make traveling to each ground convenient.
Euro 2024: Groups
Germany has qualified as hosts, with England and Scotland also securing their spots. The group draw has resulted in some exciting matchups:
- Group A: Germany, Scotland, Hungary, Switzerland
- Group B: Spain, Croatia, Italy, Albania
- Group C: Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, England
- Group D: Poland, Netherlands, Austria, France
- Group E: Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine
- Group F: Turkey, Georgia, Portugal, Czechia
Euro 2024: How Germany Earned the Tournament
Germany was awarded this edition of the Euros in 2018 after 17 members of the UEFA executive committee voted for the three-time winners over Turkey. The vote took place at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. This will be the first time Germany has hosted the event since 1988. Germany’s top infrastructure required minimal work ahead of the tournament, contributing to Turkey’s loss, along with their poor human rights record.
Euro 2024: Weather and Kick-Off Times
The weather in Germany in June and July is similar to the UK, with Berlin’s average summer temperature ranging between 16°C and 22°C. The weather should not pose a problem for players or fans. Group stage games will start at 2 pm, 5 pm, and 8 pm UK time, with Germany one hour ahead. The semi-finals and final are set to kick off at 8 pm UK time.
