Devin Haney is eager for a rematch with Ryan Garcia, seeking a fair contest after their recent bout ended in controversy. Despite Garcia’s failure to make weight, the American secured a majority-decision victory over Haney in Brooklyn, marking Haney’s first professional defeat but without claiming the WBC super-lightweight title.
Garcia’s inability to meet the weight requirements rendered him ineligible to claim the championship belt. Haney, 25, hinted at the weight discrepancy potentially favoring Garcia’s performance.
Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, Haney expressed gratitude, saying, “First off, I wanna say.. Alhamdulillah. Allah is the perfect planner, and I trust His plan no matter what. I came up short, but this is boxing. I’ve always wanted to test my skills against the best.”
Acknowledging Garcia’s win, Haney continued, “Ryan was victorious that night, and that’s okay. I believe weight may have played a role, but only Allah knows. I’m eager for a rematch, ensuring a fair fight at an agreed weight.”
Haney is currently spending time with family and observing Ramadan. He concluded, “After Ramadan, I’ll update you all on what’s next. Thanks to everyone for the support. I will return stronger, InshaAllah.”
Post the Haney fight, Garcia has expressed interest in facing several potential opponents, including Conor Benn, Errol Spence Jr, UFC’s Sean O’Malley, and Gervonta Davis, who last April defeated Garcia with a body shot, becoming the first to hand Garcia a loss.
