Covid news update

There were 32 new Covid fatalities over the past 24 hours, bringing the toll to 735, and 3,481 new cases, raising the total to 123,066, the Public Health Ministry reported on Friday morning.

Of the 3,481 cases logged on Thursday, 2,530 were in the general population and 951 in prisons.

Since the third and worst wave of Covid-19 started on April 1 total cases have risen to 94,203, 52,078 of whom have already recovered.

The health ministry said 2,868 patients were confirmed fully recovered and discharged from hospitals on Thursday.

Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said later during his daily briefing that the 32 new fatalities were aged 21-93 years. Seventeen were men and 15 women.

Fifteen had caught  Covid-19 from family members and six from friends, at workplaces, prisons and hospitals. Seven either lived or visited outbreak areas. Four had risky jobs,  including vendors and garbage collectors.

Fifteen people who died had hypertension and 10 suffered from diabetes. Other chronic diseases among them included high cholesterol, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, liver disease and obesity.

Fifteen new fatalities were in Bangkok, six in Nonthaburi, two in Samut Sakhon and one each in Nakhon Pathom, Phatthalung, Surin, Nakhon Ratchasima, Yala, Samut Prakan, Roi Et, Phangnga and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The 3,481 new cases over the past 24 hours included 2,518 local infections outside prisons and 12 imported cases.

Of the local infections, 1,644 were confirmed at hospitals and 874 via mass testing.

Bangkok still recorded the most cases at 1,036, followed by 457 in Samut Prakan, 163 in Nonthaburi, 162 in Pathum Thani, 127 in Chon Buri, 77 in Phetchaburi, 54 Ranong, 45 in Tak, 40 in Samut Sakhon and 36 in Songkhla.

Twenty-one provinces did not report a new Covid-19 case in the previous 24 hours. They were Nakhon Sawan, Phatthalung, Phitsanulok, Lamphun, Krabi, Lampang, Buri Ram, Ang Thong, Nakhon Phanom, Nan, Kalasin, Phayao, Loei, Phrae, Nong Khai, Phangnga, Mae Hong Son, Amnat Charoen, Mukdahan, Bung Kan and Satun.

The 12 imported cases comprised 11 Thai online administrators who returned from Cambodia and a female Australian Red Cross trainer from Egypt.

As of Thursday, 42,827 Covid-19 cases were in hospitals, including 1,248 critically ill patients and 408 dependent on ventilators.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 651,684 in 24 hours to 165.84 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 13,032 to 3.44 million. India had 259,269 new cases for a total of 26.03 million and 4,209 new deaths for a toll of 291,365.
