Supporters made their thoughts clear just days before the country comes together to mark 100 years since the end of WW1
Footage of a group of Celtic supporters singing an anti-poppy chant has been shared across social media.
In the clip, posted during Celtic’s 5-0 hammering of Dundee FC on Wednesday evening, Bhoys fans can be heard singing “shove yer f** poppy up your a***” – just days before the nation comes together for Remembrance Day.
The video was posted on a woman’s Twitter page with the caption “shove yer poppy.”
Her post has been widely criticised with those commenting that the incident was “vile”.
The short clip, which was taken in the away stand at Dens Park, starts off with loud clapping being heard.
Then quite clearly the group of fans chant: “You can shove your f** poppy, shove your f** poppy, shove your f** poppy up your a*.”
The video posted on the wall has been viewed more than 45,000 times and also been shared across social media.
@WallyBlueEyes said: “I feel for the decent Celtic supporters, I really do, I have plenty of friends who would despair at this. Celtic Football Club need to call them out. This is beyond the pale, it really is lowest of the low.”
@ade_newman said: “Vile. Shame they don’t know history of Irish troops fighting in WW1.”
@TheLewisMcinnes commented: “Quite vile. I understand if they don’t want to wear one, but this is nasty.”
Stoke City midfielder James McClean is one of the highest profile footballers who refuses to wear a poppy and he has asked people to “respect his decision.”
The Stoke winger confirmed that his shirt will not have a Remembrance Day poppy on it when his team host Middlesbrough on Saturday and face Nottingham Forest away the following weekend.
McClean, 29, said: “I know many people won’t agree with my decision or even attempt to gain an understanding of why I don’t wear a poppy.
“I accept that but I would ask people to be respectful of the choice I have made, just as I’m respectful of people who do choose to wear a poppy.”
