Brakes fail as car ploughs into pedestrians in London leaving several badly hurt after

A car mounted the pavement and struck a number of pedestrians in Stamford Hill, in east London with several people feared to have been badly hurt – emergency services are at the scene

A car has ploughed into pedestrians in east London with several people feared to be badly injured.

Emergency services are at the scene after the incident in Stamford Hill where an area has been cordoned off with police tape.

Four people were taken to a major trauma centre and another who was hurt was rushed to hospital.

The incident which happened shortly after 9.30am on Friday is currently not being treated as terror-related.

One eyewitness, who works in a Nissan garage across the road, told the PA news agency the driver of the car was a man who looked to be in his early 60s and was in “shock” after the crash. 

The driver was overheard telling police his brakes had failed, after being helped out of the ruined car by two “elderly gentlemen”, according to the witness.

The witness, who asked not to be named, said: “I heard a bang, that was when the car hit the bus stop.

“The car was on the kerb and I saw two people flying in mid-air. 

“After that he hit a Mitsubishi parked over there and his car did a 90-degree rotation. 

“Another guy on crutches got hit.

“A few elderly gentlemen helped him out the car, people in the shop came out to help.

“I called police and they were here in two or three minutes. I saw five people getting treated including the driver. He was an older-looking man in shock.”

Footage from the scene shows a large police presence and several ambulances.

What appears to be broken glass surrounds a partially ruined bus stop.

Witnesses can be seen gathered around outside the cordoned area, looking on at the worrying scene.

One said on social media: “Pray that nobody is seriously hurt.”

Another described the incident as “so, so sad.”

Metropolitan Police have said in a statement: “Police and London Ambulance Service are in attendance at a collision in Stamford Hill, N16.

“We await an update on any injuries.

“At this early stage, this incident is not being treated as terror-related.”

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said : “We were called at 9.37am today (December 11) to reports of a road traffic collision involving a car and pedestrians on Stamford Hill.

“We sent a number of resources to the scene, including six ambulance crews, an incident response officer, a medic in a car, a team leader and our hazardous area response teams.

“Five adults were treated at the scene. We took four to a major trauma centre, and one person was taken to hospital by an Hatzola ambulance crew.”
