Aston Villa Unveils New Crest Amid Mixed Reactions

Aston Villa has unveiled their new club crest, and if it feels like déjà vu, you’re not alone. On Friday morning, the West Midlands club revealed their latest crest in a stylish video on social media, showcasing the new logo, font, and various iterations of the crest.

Some fans may recall hearing about a crest change not too long ago. Indeed, it was only last summer that Villa announced a redesign of their club crest. After a fan vote, they introduced a new round badge design for the 2022/23 season. However, it soon became clear that the crest wasn’t going to stick around as the branding across the club and Villa Park remained unchanged.

A club statement confirmed that a new badge was being designed for the 2023/24 season, ahead of Villa’s 150th anniversary, and this new crest was officially unveiled today. The reaction on social media has been mixed, with many fans surprised by yet another crest change.

One fan wrote, “Swear they’ve only just changed the crest? Rebrands are expensive.” Another joked, referencing a tagline from the video, “‘Uncomplicated Consistency’ whilst announcing the 3rd badge in as many years wasn’t the marketing department’s brightest tagline, was it?” A third commented, “Didn’t they change their badge to the circular one only last year?” A fourth penned, “Do they just change the badge every season now or something?”

Despite the initial skepticism when the badge was leaked a few months ago, many Villa fans have warmed to the new design and were impressed by the official announcement. One person wrote, “Absolutely love it. Fresh branding unique to us with a nod to our history!” Another commented, “Nice video. Liking the new brand typeface, all there really. The drop shadow on the solid yellow lion crest needs a rethink, other than that it’s a decent rebrand.” A third penned, “That’s a pretty impressive overall identity. Really like how they’ve layered in previous versions of the badge into the latest design, used the shield as a framing device, and then applied elements across the wider visual communications.”

Others speculated that the timing of the unveiling signals an imminent new kit announcement. Villa has signed a contract with Adidas to be their new kit manufacturer, starting from June 1. After issues with their kits last season, Villa fans are hoping for better quality from Adidas as the club makes its return to the Champions League.
