As storms pounded Thailand’s northern provinces on Friday, a girl was killed by a falling tree.

In Phrae province, a massive weeping fig (Ficus benjamina) tree collapsed into the family home, killing a six-year-old girl. Last night’s summer storms also hit Phetchabun and Chiang Rai provinces, uprooting trees and generating outages.

Strong winds and hail struck Ban Pa Daeng hamlet in the Tao Pun sub-district of Song district in Phrae, causing the century-old weeping fig tree to fall and smash the house.

The girl was hurried to the district hospital by locals and members of the Tao Pun Tambon (sub-district) Administrative Organization, but she was declared dead when she arrived.

Yesterday afternoon, hail also caused damage to several homes in four villages in the Nam Nao district.

Strong winds and torrential rains in the province of Chiang Rai hit a number of areas, including the Mueang district, where multiple power poles fell and resulted in widespread blackouts.

Power poles and numerous uprooted trees fell over the Wiang Burapha Road, obstructing traffic.  The now-reopened road was cleaned of debris using large equipment.

However, according to district officials, the rain has contributed to a decrease in air pollution in the area, and for the first time in two months, the PM2.5 status has changed from red to yellow.
