Former Liverpool defender and renowned football pundit Alan Hansen is currently seriously ill in hospital, as confirmed by his former club, Liverpool.
A statement from the Premier League club read: “The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently seriously ill in hospital. The club is in contact with Alan’s family to provide support during this difficult time. Our thoughts, wishes, and hopes are with Alan and the Hansen family. We will provide further updates as we receive them and request that the Hansen family’s privacy is respected at this time.”
Hansen, who signed from Partick Thistle in 1977, enjoyed a glittering 14-year career at Liverpool, winning eight First Division titles, three European Cups, and two FA Cups. Serving as captain for four years, his 620 appearances place him among the top 10 Liverpool players in history. Hansen also earned 26 caps for Scotland and played in the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
Following his retirement from playing, Hansen, now 68, became a prominent football pundit, spending over 20 years with the BBC before retiring in 2014.
Gary Lineker, Hansen’s former colleague on Match of the Day, expressed his concern on X: “Horrendous news. Thoughts are with Alan, Janet, and all the family.” The BBC’s Match of the Day account added: “The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Match of the Day are with Alan and his family at this difficult time.”
