Crystal Palace ensured their Premier League status for another season with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle at Selhurst Park, courtesy of a Jean-Philippe Mateta double.
Mateta opened the scoring ten minutes into the second half, combining with Jordan Ayew before finishing past Martin Dubravka. He sealed the win late on, converting a Will Hughes assist for his 11th league goal.
Newcastle’s best chance came in the first half when Alexander Isak was denied by Dean Henderson’s quick reaction. The Magpies felt aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty late on after Sean Longstaff went down, but VAR upheld the referee’s decision.
Under Oliver Glasner’s management, Mateta has flourished, scoring eight goals since Glasner’s arrival in February. The French striker’s improved work rate and finishing have been instrumental in Palace’s recent successes, netting seven goals in his last seven games.
Palace looks set to extend Mateta’s contract, keen to retain his services following his impressive form.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s hopes of securing European football took a hit as they lacked creativity, managing just one shot on target. They face Sheffield United next, aiming to recapture their earlier form.
