Zelensky's Minerals Deal in Limbo Amid Trump Address to Congress

A senior US official has cast doubt on the prospect of President Donald Trump announcing a minerals deal with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his upcoming address to Congress. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the deal is “not at present” on the table, despite previous reports suggesting Trump wanted to unveil it.

This deal was meant to be signed during a meeting between Trump and Zelensky at the White House last week, but discussions derailed following a heated exchange. After the US announced it would stop military assistance on Monday, Zelensky expressed his readiness to enter peace talks, referring to the conflict with Russia as “regrettable.”

Zelensky emphasized after the summit that Ukraine is prepared to sign the minerals agreement whenever the conditions are right, which he sees as a step toward increased security.

The simultaneous timing of Trump’s congressional speech, set for 9:10 PM (02:10 GMT), alongside Zelensky’s growing urgency in negotiations has drawn attention. The two leaders’ previous exchange was marked by Trump accusing Zelensky of gambling with the lives of many.

In response to the announcement that the US will suspend military aid, Ukraine ramps up efforts to secure clarity about future supplies. Zelensky has directed his defense minister to obtain precise information regarding military assistance from the US.

Amid this uncertainty, discussions continue amongst European leaders about the need for a united front in peace negotiations. The leaders from several countries, including the UK, are focused on ensuring Ukraine feels supported while navigating these complex dynamics.

Meanwhile, former Trump adviser Steve Bannon and others have voiced criticisms towards Zelensky, undermining his leadership and questioning his legitimacy, despite his significant electoral mandate.

In other developments, tensions have escalated in the region. A North Korean defector revealed that troops sent to fight in Ukraine are being threatened with severe consequences for their families should they be captured, contributing to the already dire situation in the conflict.

Overall, as Zelensky prepares for the future, the strained relations and fluctuating support present ongoing challenges for Ukraine amidst the dual pressures of international diplomacy and conflict.
