Tragedy struck at a popular ski resort in the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, where twelve individuals were found dead inside a restaurant. The Mtskheta-Mtianeti Police Department reported that no signs of injuries or violence were detected on the bodies.
The grim discovery was made in Gudauri, a well-known ski destination approximately 75 miles north of Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital. According to officials, the bodies of 12 employees of the same restaurant were located in a resting area on the second floor of the establishment.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a power generator had been improperly placed in a confined space, close to sleeping areas within the resort. As a result, authorities have launched an investigation under Article 116 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, indicating that the deaths may have resulted from negligent manslaughter. Among the deceased, 11 individuals were foreign nationals, while one was a Georgian citizen.
“Investigative actions are actively being carried out, with forensic and criminalistics teams on-site and interviews of individuals connected to the case underway,” the authorities stated. A forensic medical examination has been initiated to determine the exact cause of death.
Gudauri is hailed as the largest and most modern ski resort in Georgia, offering an extensive infrastructure and ample opportunities for skiing and freestyle sports in an open environment. The resort is situated at one of the highest elevations along the Georgian Military Road, attracting mountain enthusiasts from around the world.
The investigation into these tragic deaths is ongoing.
