Jake Paul proposed a significant rule change during a heated press conference in New York regarding his much-anticipated fight with Mike Tyson. The bout is set to take place on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with the event being streamed exclusively on Netflix and expected to draw a large crowd in the 80,000-seat venue, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Paul, who improved his professional record to 9-1 with a first-round win over Ryan Bourland in March, will face Tyson, the former undisputed heavyweight champion. Tyson last fought in a six-round exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020.
The fight is currently scheduled for eight rounds of two minutes each, with both fighters using 14-ounce gloves. Tyson has reportedly requested shorter rounds to encourage more action inside the ring, commenting, “If we have shorter rounds, we’ll fight more.”
However, during the press conference, Paul challenged Tyson to agree to a change that would extend the fight to ten three-minute rounds. “Don’t talk to me about shape,” he retorted, adding, “You want 10 threes? See, that’s the thing. Everyone is all talk. I’ll do whatever.”
Tyson did not accept the proposed change but cautioned Paul, saying, “Be careful,” reiterating, “He should be very careful.”
The build-up to the fight has generated considerable interest, especially with claims from former four-time world super-middleweight champion Carl Froch that Tyson could be paid less if he wins in the first round or achieves a knockout. “From what I’m hearing with the contracts, allegedly, he gets paid less if he wins in round one or receives a knockout,” Froch said. “There’s a clause in his contract that means he’ll earn less if he goes out there and destroys Jake Paul.”
Paul himself seemed to confirm that he would be earning $40 million from the fight, stating, “I’m here to make $40 million and knock out a legend. I don’t care about anything else. He’s the one who wanted to make a professional fight. He’s going to get his ass knocked out on a real record. You’re going to see it on BoxRec: Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson: KO.”
