Drunken man pulls gun on plainclothes officers

Two plainclothes police officers from Bang Rak station fatally shot a drunken man outside a nightclub on Surawong Road early Thursday morning.

The officers reported that they were on a surveillance assignment when they received a call about a man behaving aggressively outside the Simply Tomboy nightclub. They arrived at the scene around 1:30 a.m. and encountered an intoxicated man later identified as 46-year-old Mongkol Kamolsawas, who claimed to be a police investigator.

When the officers asked Mongkol for identification and requested to search his nearby motorcycle, he allegedly pulled out a gun and fired at them. The officers returned fire, killing him. They maintain that their intention was not to kill but to defend themselves.

Other police officers arrived shortly afterward to find Mongkol lying in a pool of blood with six gunshot wounds. A 9mm pistol and several cartridges were found near his body.

Mongkol’s older brother, Suksom Kamolsawas, 50, revealed that Mongkol had gone to the nightclub to confront his girlfriend, who he suspected was having an affair with an employee there. Suksom accused the officers of overreacting and vowed to seek justice for his brother.

Suksom also mentioned that Mongkol had been accused of involvement in a murder case 10 years ago, but the court later dismissed the charges.

Pol Col Thammasak Saraboon, commander of Bang Rak station, stated that the officers handled the situation appropriately, emphasizing that security footage clearly showed Mongkol firing first.
