The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has taken action to temporarily suspend services for 2.14 million mobile phone numbers whose owners failed to register their identities by the July 13 deadline. This measure is aimed at enhancing security and reducing fraud associated with unregistered mobile numbers.
NBTC Commissioner Pol Gen Nathathorn Prousoontorn clarified that the affected numbers belong primarily to individuals who possess between six and 100 unregistered SIM cards. As a result of non-compliance, these users will experience suspension of their call, SMS, and internet services. He emphasized that if the SIM cards are not registered within the next 30 to 45 days, the numbers will be permanently revoked and redistributed.
Additionally, the NBTC, under instruction from the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), is reviewing approximately 80 million mobile phone numbers linked to over 113 million mobile banking accounts. The aim is to ensure that SIM card ownership aligns accurately with account holders, with the review expected to conclude by the end of September.
In a separate initiative to secure telecommunications operations in five border provinces, the NBTC has addressed 465 unauthorized cell signal boosters, having already dismantled 179 of these devices.
