Marseille Set to Sign Mason Greenwood After Talks with Man United

Marseille Set to Sign Mason Greenwood After Man United Talks

Mason Greenwood, who has not played for Manchester United since January 2022, is reportedly close to joining Olympique de Marseille following ‘constructive’ discussions with Manchester United.

Greenwood, the former England forward, recently met with Man United’s football leadership group, led by new sporting director Dan Ashworth, to discuss his future. It has been made clear by United that Greenwood’s future lies away from Old Trafford, despite interest from several European clubs.

The 22-year-old trained alone at the club on Monday, after spending the last season on loan with Getafe in Spain, where he scored 10 goals in 36 appearances. Clubs such as Valencia, Borussia Dortmund, Benfica, and Juventus have shown interest in Greenwood, but Marseille appears to be his likely destination.

The French club, which recently appointed former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi as their new coach, is in advanced talks to sign Greenwood. According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United values Greenwood at £40m (€47.3m), but Marseille’s bid is reportedly around €30m (£25.3m) with a significant sell-on clause.

Greenwood last played for Manchester United in January 2022 and has a contract at Old Trafford until 2025, with an option for the club to extend it for an additional year. He scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for United after progressing through the club’s academy.

Manchester United is expected to reinvest the transfer fee received for Greenwood in a move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

In October 2022, Greenwood faced charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He denied all the counts, and the criminal charges were dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew their cooperation and new material came to light, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.
