Aston Villa has reached an agreement with Chelsea to acquire left-back Ian Maatsen. The deal, valued between £35m and £40m, includes additional performance-based add-ons. Maatsen will ink a six-year contract with Villa, with personal terms already settled. The 22-year-old’s move is notable as his £35m release clause has been effectively met.
Interest from Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund had shown strong interest in Maatsen following his successful loan stint with them last season. During his time in the Bundesliga, Maatsen made 16 appearances, netting two goals, and played seven times in the Champions League, scoring once. Despite their interest, Dortmund was unable to match the release clause in his Chelsea contract, paving the way for Villa’s successful bid.
Strategic Move by Villa
Sky Sports News chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol highlighted the strategic nature of the move: “Maatsen had a release clause that Dortmund could have activated, but it expired, allowing Aston Villa to step in. The player’s desire to continue playing in the Champions League made Villa’s offer particularly attractive. This signing is a significant boost for Unai Emery’s side, given Maatsen’s impressive performance at Dortmund, where he helped them reach the Champions League final.”
