Premier League clubs are set to reject Wolves’ bold proposal to scrap VAR, according to talkSPORT.
Wolves need the support of at least 13 other clubs during their two-day AGM in Harrogate, starting on Friday. However, a separate proposal from Aston Villa to increase the amount clubs can lose under PSR rules over a three-year period from £105m to £135m is expected to pass.
VAR, introduced at the start of the 2019/20 season to assist referees with key decisions, has been a source of controversy due to inconsistent and contentious calls. Wolves argued for its removal, citing nine reasons, but needed 14 votes in favor for the motion to pass.
In a statement, Wolves acknowledged the initial good faith behind VAR’s introduction but highlighted its negative impact on the relationship between fans and football, and its undermining of the Premier League brand. The club stressed that their proposal was made with respect for the Premier League, PGMOL, and other competitors, calling for a critical debate on VAR’s future.
The Premier League spokesperson confirmed a discussion on VAR would be facilitated at the AGM, acknowledging the concerns but reaffirming the league’s commitment to VAR and ongoing improvements alongside PGMOL.
PGMOL chief Howard Webb suggested enhancing communication of VAR decisions through stadium PA systems. VAR’s use this season has sparked significant debate, notably during Nottingham Forest’s clash with Everton and Tottenham’s controversial win against Liverpool, where a significant error ruled out a legitimate goal by Luis Diaz.
