caregiver is accused of stealing more than $500,000

A caregiver was apprehended by Thai Crime suppression officials on suspicion of stealing more than 500,000 baht from the home of a bedridden patient in Huai Khwang, Bangkok.
The suspect, who was only named in public as Ms. Ubonrat, 27, was charged with nighttime theft and unauthorized use of another person’s credit card by a Thai criminal court order.
The victim’s family had previously hired Ubonrat from a caregiver agency to look after an 81-year-old patient who was bedridden. Ubonrat had moved into the victim’s home in August 2023 after being assigned to care for the ill. For the victim’s privacy, her name was not disclosed.
The patient’s daughter testified that on October 19th, she planned to take out cash from an ATM, but there was insufficient money in the account—more than 700,000 baht—when she tried to do so. The daughter subsequently reported the incident to the Huai Khwang police officers in an attempt to identify the perpetrator, and as a result, Ubonrat was placed under arrest.

According to reports, Ubonrat admitted her transgressions and gambled away the entirety of the victim’s funds online. In anticipation of further legal action, Huai Khwang police officers first detained Ubonrat.
