After being detained for stealing a gold store, a former deputy manager of a private transportation firm said that he did it to settle a debt from online gambling.
On Saturday, Thong Lor police apprehended Methee, a 44-year-old man, close to the Kluai Nam Thai intersection. He was suspected of stealing a necklace from a store in a department store on Rama IV Road that weighed one baht (15.2 grammes) and was valued at 32,200 baht at the time.
The man resembled the person who entered the store on the evening of September 3 by posing as a client, according to the description. While the staff was briefly preoccupied, he quickly grabbed the necklace.
The suspect was located on Saturday morning by authorities using security footage to hunt him down. He was still wearing the same clothes as the day of the theft.
Police reportedly confronted the man as he attempted to enter a hotel and saw that he was acting strangely. The officers searched him and found a pawn ticket, which they have now taken as evidence.
According to the police, Mr. Methee confessed to the crime and said that his addiction to online gambling had caused him to steal the gold when he was unable to pay his debts.
He admitted to planning the crime for two days before committing it. He continued by stating that he was a respected private transportation company’s deputy sales manager.
He is currently being held at the Thong Lor police station after being accused by the police of daytime stealing.
