‘Thailand now stable,’ claims Thai PM on U.S tour:

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said Thailand’s political stability has improved as the government has stepped up its efforts to solve long-standing problems besetting the country.

He was speaking to representatives of Thai communities in the US at the Plaza Athenee Hotel in New York, where he will be staying as he attends the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Media reported that the flight carrying his delegation landed at John F Kennedy International Airport at 11.05am local time on Sunday.

Gen Prayut is accompanied by Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai and Natural Resources and Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa.

At the meeting, Gen Prayut said that over the past five years, the government under his direction has initiated numerous political, economic and social reforms, and reviewed and improved more than 400 laws.

“We are still trying to solve other long-standing problems, such as human trafficking and labour-related issues. We are also taking concrete measures to improve public welfare benefits and address other bread-and-butter issues affecting people’s daily lives,” the prime minister said.

Gen Prayut went on to say that the government acknowledges the need to transform Thailand into a knowledge-based society, while at the same time providing ample economic opportunities for farmers and other workers to narrow the income gap.

The premier also said that during his visit, he plan to attend sessions on universal health coverage and climate change.

As Thailand is the current chair of Asean, Gen Prayut said that he plans to propose the inclusion of environmental sustainability at the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to a source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Gen Prayut is scheduled to return to Thailand on Friday.
