Thailand has welcomed 15 million foreign visitors in the first seven months of 2023, according to the government, citing successful promotions by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the government’s appealing policies to international filmmakers.
According to Rachada Dhnadirek, Deputy Government Spokesperson, the country attracted more than 15 million international visitors from January to July of this year. She highlighted a variety of factors, including summer vacations for schools in other countries and the successful promotion of TAT’s new campaign “Amazing Thailand Health and Wellness: New Chapters, New Experience.”
Rachada noted that Thailand has also been a popular venue for filmmaking this year, with the Thailand Film Office (TFO) of the Department of Tourism noting that 246 productions from 32 nations used Thailand as a filming location in the first half of 2023. This is owing to the government providing incentives for international filmmakers to choose Thailand as their shooting destination, such as a 15%-20% cash rebate for those investing at least 50 million baht in Thailand while filming.
According to Thailand Film Office data, the United States spent 519 million baht on 14 projects, followed by China, which spent 349 million baht on 17 projects. Hong Kong invested 328 million baht in 11 projects, whereas the
The UK invested 261 million baht on 19 projects, while Germany spent 201 million baht on 11 filmmaking projects.
TAT expects three trillion baht in tourism revenue next year, with 1.92 trillion baht from abroad visitors and 1.08 trillion baht from domestic tourists, according to Rachada. TAT also intends to promote local attractions in various regions in order to spread revenue across the country.
