1,000 Baht fine for driving through Pattaya tunnel on motorbike

Pattaya Tunnel was finally opened up for public use last month after long delays, but you can only use it if you have a car, or face a 1,000 Baht fine.

Motorcyclists in Pattaya are facing an expensive learning curve when it comes to the newly opened Pattaya tunnel on Sukhumvit Road.

After many have been caught using the tunnel which is clearly signposted prohibited to Motorcycles and fined up to 1,000 baht.

Police Chief Col. Apichai Kroppech said on August 29 that in the tunnels first three days of being open 18 motorcyclists were caught using the tunnel and fined, stating that the tunnel is clearly signposted but motorists simply ignore them.

Pinit Maneerat, a City spokesman went on to say that motorcycles, tuk-tuks and carts are all not permitted to use the tunnel as there is no dedicated lane for them to do so.

He went on to reiterate that large trucks and trucks carrying dangerous or hazardous cargo were also not permitted to use the new tunnel.

The speed limit in the tunnel is 80kph and stopping in the tunnel is strictly prohibited as one Facebook user recently found out after authorities were alerted to a post online where a man stopped in the tunnel to pose for pictures next to his red sports car.
