Zelensky Advocates for European Army Amid Concerns Over U.S. Support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the establishment of an “army of Europe,” expressing skepticism about relying on the United States for defense, particularly under President Donald Trump’s leadership.

Zelensky stated that the “old days” of unwavering American support for Europe are over, cautioning that “America might say no to Europe” on issues involving security. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, he emphasized that Europe needs to take charge of its own defense. “As we fight this war and lay the groundwork for peace, we must build the armed forces of Europe,” he said.

Zelensky highlighted that his administration must prioritize Europe’s security, particularly in the face of continued threats from Russia. He expressed concern that recent discussions have not included enough focus on European military readiness, noting the need for a cohesive voice rather than multiple conflicting opinions.

His comments follow Trump’s recent conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the former president suggested collaboration to end the war in Ukraine without explicitly recognizing the need for European involvement. Zelensky indicated the necessity of holding a meeting with allies in Kyiv or online to discuss comprehensive security guarantees for Ukraine.

The report further indicates that Ukraine may need to concede certain territories, though Zelensky maintained that Ukraine will not accept decisions made without its involvement.

The calls for bolstered European military presence come in the wake of ongoing violence in Ukraine, prompting leaders across the continent, including British officials David Lammy and John Healey, to advocate for shared responsibility in regional security. They stressed that the international community must remain vigilant against Russia’s ambitions and that Europe must enhance its defense spending.

In a display of unity, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged European leaders to focus on concrete proposals rather than solely criticizing U.S. actions. He acknowledged America’s commitment to NATO but added that European nations must step up their contributions as well.

As various leaders gather in Germany for security discussions, the urgency for a coherent strategy to enhance Europe’s military capabilities remains paramount. The potential establishment of an effective European army could not only provide strength against external threats but also reaffirm the continent’s commitment to its own security and stability in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
