Humphries and Wade Reach World Matchplay Darts Semi-Finals

Top seed Luke Humphries advanced to the semi-finals of the World Matchplay on Thursday, defeating Dimitri Van den Bergh to set up a clash with James Wade. Humphries, the world champion, averaged 101.21 and delivered a spectacular 164 checkout, securing a 16-10 victory over ‘The Dream Maker’. He will face 2007 champion Wade, who also won 16-10 against Ross Smith, marking his first semi-final appearance in nine years.

World Matchplay Darts: Quarter-Final Results:

  • James Wade 16-10 Ross Smith
  • Luke Humphries 16-10 Dimitri Van den Bergh

Humphries began with a strong start, breaking Van den Bergh’s throw twice to lead 3-0. Despite Van den Bergh’s efforts, including pulling back two legs to trail just 3-2 at the first interval, Humphries maintained control. The Belgian leveled the match post-restart, but Humphries regained the lead, taking an 8-7 advantage into the mid-session break.

With a 115 checkout and another break, Humphries edged ahead 11-8. Despite Van den Bergh’s resilience, Humphries powered through, winning five consecutive legs and completing the match with a stunning 164 finish.

Quotes from Humphries:

“After the first five legs, I felt deflated and tired. I just didn’t feel like the real Luke Humphries tonight. But I told myself to stick in there and work hard. It was a great performance in the last few legs.”

Vintage Wade Dominates:

Wade delivered a vintage performance, averaging 100.30 and hitting 13 180s to reach his ninth World Matchplay semi-final. Initially the underdog, Wade took control with his trademark finishing under pressure, denying Smith a comeback.

Quotes from Wade:

“I feel really good after that. It was a great game, and I’m glad I played a little bit better than Ross. My scoring was good, and I know I can play a lot better.”

Smith started strong, averaging 114 in the first five legs for a 3-2 lead. However, Wade’s consistent finishing, including checkouts of 120 and 121, put him ahead. Despite Smith’s continued efforts, Wade sealed the match by winning the final three legs.
