Update on British Passport Fees

Update on British Passport Fees

The following proposals, pending parliamentary approval, will include:

  • A standard online application made from within the UK will increase to £88.50 for adults and £57.50 for children.
  • The standard postal application fee will rise to £100.00 for adults and £69.00 for children.
  • An online application when applying from overseas will cost £101.00 for adults and £65.50 for children.
  • A paper application when applying from overseas will cost £112.50 for adults and £77.00 for children.
  • Overseas passports are also subject to additional courier fees.

These adjustments aim to ensure that the revenue from these applications aligns more closely with the costs associated with delivering passports and related operations, thereby reducing dependence on general taxation funding. It’s important to note that the government does not generate any profit from passport application fees.

These fees contribute to covering the expenses of processing passport applications, providing consular support overseas (including for lost or stolen passports), and handling British citizens at UK borders. The fee increase will also support ongoing improvements in government services.

These revised fees apply to both new passport applications and renewals. Applicants are advised to apply well in advance of their travel date, as passports are typically issued within 3 weeks for applications made from within the UK.
