The rematch between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk has been officially scheduled for December 21, 2024. Ukrainian star Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999 by outpointing Fury earlier this month. The immediate rematch was part of their pre-fight contract.
Saudi boxing chief H.E. Turki Alalshikh confirmed the date, stating, “The rematch between the Undisputed Champion Oleksandr Usyk and the Champion Tyson Fury is now scheduled on the 21 of December 2024 during Riyadh Season. The world will watch another historical fight again…Our commitment to boxing fans continues…We hope you enjoy it…”
Both fighters endured significant facial injuries during their first bout, making the December date ideal for recovery. Usyk, who returned home with his belts and a bruised face, is currently awaiting a decision on whether he must vacate his IBF title. He has filed for an exception to retain the title, which was anticipated to be on the line for Filip Hrgovic’s clash with Daniel Dubois. Anthony Joshua, who was also targeting a shot at the belt, will now look to face the winner in 2025 after his planned September fight.
Tyson Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, revealed that the Briton is eager for revenge. “Immediately after, he said, ‘I want the rematch.’ When we got out of the ring, before we did the press conference, I just said to him, look, ‘the rematch is signed.’ It was part of the contract. So just think about it. Go back to your family. You’ve got plenty of time. No rush to say anything.”
Usyk’s manager, Alex Krassyuk, confirmed the rematch date, telling talkSPORT hosts Jim White and Simon Jordan, “Yes, this is the date we were looking at and have confirmed with Turki Alalshikh. We all gave our go-ahead and it will happen on December 21.”
The boxing world eagerly awaits another epic showdown as both champions prepare for their highly anticipated rematch.
