The 2 New Zealand tourist blacklisted from Thailand after attack on policeman in Phuket

After a disturbing incident involving an assault on a traffic police officer in Phuket, two tourists from New Zealand are facing serious consequences as Thai authorities take swift action.

Deputy police chief Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn announced that the immigration police chief in Phuket had been directed to blacklist Oscar Day, aged 36, and Hamish Day, aged 34, following their court case. The decision was made to prevent them from re-entering Thailand, as shared on Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn’s Facebook page.

The brothers arrived in Thailand on March 11 and were permitted to stay until April 9 under the visa exemption for New Zealand visitors, allowing a 30-day stay.

They are being charged with multiple offenses including robbery, obstructing a police officer, physical assault on a policeman, driving without a license, and bribery.

The seriousness of these charges stems from the physical altercation between Oscar and Hamish Day and Pol Sen Sgt Maj Somsak Noo-iad of Chalong Station in Muang district. The incident occurred when the police officer tried to stop them for speeding in a residential area and not following traffic rules. Despite the officer’s attempt to intervene, the brothers resisted, leading to a physical confrontation.

Authorities plan to seek extended detention of the New Zealanders through a court permission request in Phuket Provincial Court. Due to concerns about their flight risk and lack of a permanent address in Thailand, police are against potential bail requests from their legal representatives.

According to reports by the New Zealand Herald, their parents, Laurence and Katrina Day, are affluent business owners with substantial property holdings. The family expressed distress over the situation and hopes for a favorable resolution.
