Thailand logged 9,742 new Covid-19 cases and 74 new fatalities during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Saturday morning.
The number of new cases dropped by 68 from 9,810 announced on Friday, but the number of new fatalities increased by eight from 66.On Friday, 10,182 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.
Since April 1, when the third wave of Covid-19 began, Thailand has treated 1,812,268 Covid-19 patients, 1,693,203 of whom have recovered to date.
Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 1,841,131 Covid-19 cases, with 1,720,629 complete recoveries so far.
The death toll stood at 18,605 during the third wave and 18,699 since the beginning of the pandemic.
The kingdom’s all-time 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities was 312 recorded on Aug 18. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.
The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration said in the afternoon that the 74 new fatalities were aged one month to 98 years. By gender, 40 were men. By nationality, 72 were Thais, one was a Myanmar national and the nationality of the other was not specified.
The one-year-old child who died was from Chiang Rai province. No existing health conditions were mentioned
Bangkok recorded six more deaths (down from four reported on Friday) while another 11 were logged in two adjacent provinces — nine in Samut Prakan (+7) and two in Samut Sakhon (-1).
The Northeast saw four new deaths in Surin (2), Udon Thani (1) and Maha Sarakham (1).
The North had 14 new deaths in Tak (4), Nakhon Sawan (4), Phitsanulok (2), Chiang Mai (2), Chiang Rai (1) and Phetchabun (1).
The South logged 12 new deaths in Phuket (6), Yala (2), Phatthalung (2), Narathiwat (1) and Surat Thani (1).
Other provinces recorded 27 more deaths — Prachin Buri (5), Suphan Buri (4), Chon Buri (3), Rayong (3), Ayutthaya (2), Chanthaburi (2), Samut Songkhram (1), Ratchaburi (1), Ang Thong (1), Prachuap Khiri Khan (1), Nakhon Nayok (1), Sing Buri (1), Phetchaburi (1) and Kanchanaburi (1).
Of the 9,742 new cases, 99.9% or 9,737 were local infections and five were imported cases. Of the local infections, 9,121 were confirmed at hospitals, 546 via mass testing and 70 in prisons.
The five imported cases were one each from Qatar, Malaysia, Turkey, Cambodia and Myanmar. They were a 39-year-old German man, 19-year-old Nepalese man, an eight-year-old Myanmar schoolgirl and two Thai female returnees aged 17 and 36.
Bangkok reported 935 new cases, up 27 from Friday’s figure, followed by 695 in Songkhla (+19), 660 in Nakhon Si Thammarat (-2), 512 in Pattani (+90), 445 in Prachuap Khiri Khan (+104) and 434 in Yala (+2).
Greater Bangkok reported 1,527 new cases (-32) and 11 new deaths (-5). Four southern border provinces had 1,892 new cases (+56) and three new deaths (-11), while 67 other provinces recorded 6,248 new cases (-37) and 59 new fatalities (+24).
On Friday, 101,803 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals, including 2,452 seriously ill patients and 560 dependent on ventilators.
As of Friday, a total of 69.9 million Covid-19 vaccine shots have been administered in Bangkok and 76 provinces. Of them, 38.7 million shots were the first dose, 28.1 million were the second and 2.1 million were the third.
On Friday, 706,378 vaccine shots were administered — 350,243 as the first dose, 331,864 as the second and 24,271 as the third.
Global Covid-19 cases rose by 457,709 in 24 hours to 243.73 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 7,790 to 4.95 million.
The United States had the most cases at 46.26 million, up 82,483. Thailand ranked 24th globally with 1.84 million cases.
