Guests at what is believed to be Michael Schumacher’s first public appearance in over a decade were given stringent rules to follow, according to reports.
The Formula 1 icon has not been seen since he suffered a life-altering head injury during a skiing accident in December 2013. After the accident, he was airlifted to a hospital and placed in a medically induced coma until June 2014. Since then, Schumacher has been recovering privately with his family, and very few individuals are said to have access to him. There have been no updates on his condition, a measure taken to safeguard his privacy.
Last week, Schumacher’s daughter, Gina, tied the knot in a private ceremony at a property in Mallorca. While there has been no official confirmation, German news outlet BILD reports that it is “very likely” that the seven-time F1 world champion attended the wedding.
To protect his privacy and the exclusivity of the event, it is claimed that guests had to surrender their mobile phones to the venue’s security staff to prevent any potential leaks of images to the media. Since his accident, no photos of Schumacher or details about his whereabouts have surfaced.
Ralf Schumacher, the former F1 driver and Michael’s brother, is also believed to have been in attendance at the wedding.
Updates about Michael Schumacher’s condition have been scarce, but some close friends, who have been permitted to visit him, have shared insights with the media. One such friend is Jean Todt, the former team principal of Ferrari and later president of the FIA, who spoke about Schumacher in an interview with French outlet L’Equipe in December.
“He is here, so I don’t miss him,” Todt said. “[But he] is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different, and wonderfully supported by his wife and children who protect him.
“His life has changed, but I cherish the moments I get to share with him. That’s all there is to say.”
