A Samut Songkram man drowned in a canal late Sunday night while trying to catch freshwater prawns.
Police identified the victim as Pichai Klinchan, 23, a resident of Tambon Khoen in Muang district.
His wife, Thidarat Sakultiew, 19, who was with him on a bank of the Mae Klong Canal in Tambon Ban Prok, cried out to other prawn catchers nearby when she saw him struggling in the water.
Thepmongkol Loi-akart, 23, who helped retrieve the body, said PIchai had weighted himself and his net with lead ballast and the net got hooked on an underwater tree stump.
