Rope cut as painters hang on 26th floor of condo

Police say they will summon the person who cut the rope used by two painters while they were working on the exterior of a condominium in Nonthaburi province earlier this week.

The incident took place around noon on Tuesday but became news after a video of the painters seeking help was widely shared online.

Prapawan Satasing, 49, a resident of a room on the 26th floor of the condo, told Thai media on Saturday that while she was sitting inside her room, she noticed two men hanging by a rope trying to clutch onto a clothes hanging rack on her balcony. One of them was signalling for help.

Her boyfriend went out to talk to them. They asked him whether they could jump onto the balcony because their safety rope had been cut.

The painter told him he had seen someone on what he believed was the 21st floor open a window and cut their rope. This made it impossible for them to get down by themselves.

The couple allowed them to land safely on their balcony. They also took a video of the rescue and posted it on TikTok.

The painter, a Myanmar national named Song, told Ms Prapawan that the culprit was a “well-dressed woman”. He said he had tried asking for help at other rooms but no one was home at the time.

The condo administration reported the incident to police.

Song later told Thai reporters that he and two friends had gone up to fix a crack on the exterior of the condo by lowering themselves from the 32nd storey.ad

As he reached the 30th floor, he felt the rope getting heavier. When he looked down, he saw a pair of hands reaching from a window, cutting his rope and causing it to fall away to the ground. He alerted his two friends.

The condo administration refused to give further information, saying only that they had already notified residents in writing that some repair work would be done between 9am and 5pm on that day involving workers using ropes outside their rooms.

They encouraged the residents to close windows and put away any items on their balconies.

Pak Kret police said they knew who cut the rope and would summon the person for questioning on Sunday. They have also taken the rope to find forensic evidence.
