On July 28, Koh Tao, in the Gulf of Thailand northwest of Koh Samui, reported a record number of visitor arrivals in a single day, according to provincial governor Wichuwat Jinto.
The tourist organization of Koh Tao, a tambon in the district of Koh Phangan, reported that 3,106 tourists came by boat on the island on July 28, the start of the six-day government holiday that concludes on August 2. He said it was a one-day record.
According to the governor, around 90% of the guests would be foreigners traveling to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party on Hat Rin beach on August 3.
In July, the number of tourists transiting via the airport on neighbouring Koh Samui was 141,454.
Based on hotel reservations, the number was predicted to rise by 30,000 to 171,834 in August. More passengers were expected to come by ferry or speed boat, in addition to those flying.
According to Ratchaporn Poonsawat, president of the Tourism Association of Koh Samui, there are presently insufficient flights to accommodate all guests who made prior accommodation reservations, resulting in cancellations.
Mr Ratchaporn stated that the group is requesting that airlines boost the number of flights to roughly 50 per day during the busy season, when an estimated 5 billion baht will be infused into the island’s economy.
