John Eustace faced a harsh introduction to his role as Derby County’s new manager as his team suffered a 4-0 defeat against QPR at Loftus Road. The loss provided a stark illustration of the challenge ahead to save Derby from relegation.
Ilias Chair was the standout performer, scoring twice, with Koki Saito and Ronnie Edwards also finding the net in what was a disappointing debut for Eustace. The manager made headlines this week by leaving Blackburn, a promotion-chasing team, for Derby, who are struggling to avoid dropping to League One.
While Blackburn sits fifth in the league, Derby’s defeat saw them slip into the bottom three on goal difference.
Eustace, familiar with the difficulties facing his new team after a recent encounter when he managed Blackburn, saw Derby start with more intent than in previous matches. However, their momentum vanished once they fell behind to QPR’s first shot on target.
Michael Frey showcased his strength by holding off three defenders before passing to Chair, who unleashed a stunning strike into the top corner, marking his first goal of the season.
Derby had a chance to equalize when Ebou Adams found himself just inside the box, but he fired over the crossbar. Frey nearly doubled QPR’s lead with a long-range volley that narrowly missed.
Moments later, QPR secured their second goal. Chair sent in a low cross that visiting keeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom failed to handle, allowing Saito to score from close range.
Eustace needed a strong halftime talk, but it failed to inspire a turnaround. Just before the hour mark, Chair scored again, converting a cut-back from Tottenham loanee Yang Min-hyeok. Edwards then headed in the fourth goal from a Kenneth Paal free-kick, capping off an impressive home performance for QPR.
Eustace’s night was further dampened when Derby finally created a good opportunity, with Kayden Jackson missing from just three yards out.
Managers’ Reactions:
QPR’s Marti Cifuentes:
“I liked a lot of things about the performance. We didn’t really know what to expect from them, but everybody was so committed. Ilias Chair is one of the best players in the league. I’m glad he got two goals. He’s a bit upset I took him off because he wanted a hat-trick, but we’re happy he’s playing well.”
Derby’s John Eustace:
“Obviously, I’m really disappointed with the result. I learned a lot about the group tonight, and there’s much to be excited about, but also plenty to improve. I thought we started well, but the goal they scored knocked the wind out of our sails. We didn’t defend well enough for the subsequent goals. We have an exciting week ahead in training, and I know this group is going to fight for every point. My job now is to boost their confidence, as it’s clear they’re low on it right now.”
