Paul Merson believes Arsenal is just a couple of injuries away from being embroiled in a real fight for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.
Despite finishing as Manchester City’s closest challengers over the past two years and securing second place both times, Merson expressed caution about the Gunners’ title aspirations. He noted that the team’s key players managed to stay fit last season, which was crucial for their performance.
In his first column of the new season for Sky Sports, Merson also discussed Liverpool under new manager Arne Slot following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, and expressed that Tottenham—with new signing Dominic Solanke—could surprise and qualify for the Champions League.
Reflecting on Arsenal, Merson stated: “I know this might be slightly controversial given their recent performances, but I believe they’re a couple of injuries away from struggling to secure a top-four spot. While they are certainly Manchester City’s closest rivals, players like William Saliba, Gabriel, Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, and Bukayo Saka all played significant roles last season.”
He recalled a prior season when Saliba suffered an injury late in the campaign, which led to Arsenal leaking goals and faltering in their title chase. “All their big players stayed fit last season, but they still couldn’t surpass Manchester City. Talking up Arsenal as title contenders again is risky for me. If they keep their squad healthy, they could challenge Pep Guardiola’s side up to the wire, but injuries could make it a tough season.”
Merson also stressed that Arsenal needs to secure a true center-forward before the transfer window closes, stating, “Without an out-and-out striker, I don’t see them winning the Premier League.”
