There is officially another helping of American Pie on the way, so you might want to save room for dessert.
The raunchy high-school comedy, starring Jason Biggs, Tara Reid, Eugene Levy, Seann William Scott and Alyson Hannigan, first hit the big screen in 1999 and was an instant hit with fans.
Since then, there were three sequels with the official cast – also made up of Chris Klein, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Natasha Lyonne, Jennifer Coolidge and Mena Suvari – as well as a spin-off series spanning a further five movies.
A decade after the Reunion, Sujata Day is getting ready to serve up another slice of the franchise.
The Insecure star, who made her directorial debut with 2020’s Definition Please, will be writing and developing a ‘fresh take’ on the flick, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Details regarding the plot and release date have not been shared, and it is not clear whether the original cast will be reprising their roles.
Sujata celebrated the news on Instagram, sharing screenshots of an article confirming the news.
‘Obsessed with raunchy comedies and American Pie is one of my all time faves,’ she wrote beside the upload.
‘So excited to be working on this movie,’ she added with emoji of the American flag and a pie.
Ava DuVernay led the celebrations in the comments below her post, penning: ‘Two words: YES. MA’AM!!! Okay, two more: LET’S. GOOOO!’
‘This is superbly amazing and incredible and phenomenal,’ a fan agreed.
‘Amazing! Can’t wait to see what you do with this,’ a follower said, as another replied: ‘Omg whattt!! Congrats. So excited to see!’
An Instagram user wrote: ‘Freaking awesome! Also one of my favorites!! Congratulations!!’
As one enthused: ‘So freaking dope! American pie has been so essential to my life as an ABCD.’
The original film followed a group of students attempting to lose their virginities at their high school prom, leading to many awkward moments, life lessons from Jim’s dad, Stifler’s mom stealing our hearts and a very inedible pie…
Tara previously teased that there were many more sequels that could be made, suggesting that the ‘franchise will never be over’.
In a chat with Metro.co.uk, in 2020, the actress – who played Vicky Lathum in the hit flick – explained that it could ‘really go anywhere’.
‘I mean I think eventually we’ll make another one but I don’t know when,’ she told us. ‘That franchise will never truly be over because it always keeps itself open for it.
‘It could be another 10-year anniversary, or it could be someone else is getting married or that they’re all taking a vacation together or a cruise – it really could go anywhere.’
