Najomtien beach fouled again by sewage

Damaged sandbags allowed sewage to again soil south Najomtien Beach.

The bags had been placed on Beach Road at Najomtien Soi 2 to block water flowing out of a drainage pipe there. But, neglected, the earthen dam had collapsed under the assault from several storms and smelly black water poured on to the sand.

It’s not the first time sewage has blackened the beach at that spot with officials in May blaming a broken pump amid promises to solve the subdistrict’s sewage problem by hooking up its system to Pattaya’s. That has yet to happen.

Mayor Sompong Sainapa promised at the time to routinely pump sewage out of the pipes and lay sandbags to protect the beach.

Workers now covered the drainage pipe with a steel plate while officials resume talks with Pattaya to take the sewage off their hands.
