A man was ambushed and killed allegedly by Muslim insurgents on a road in Narathiwat’s Sungai Padi district Wednesday night, police said.
The Sungai Padi police station was alerted at 8pm that Aseng Madiyah, 56, had been shot dead on the Sungai Padi-Joh I Rong road in Ban Bua Rangae village in Tambon Tohdeng.
Police said Aseng was shot three times in the body and head with an M16 assault rifle. Seven spent shell casings of M16 rounds were found at the scene.
Police said the man was riding his motorcycle home after praying at a local mosque when he was attacked.
Aseng used to be an assistant village head but was fired following allegations that he was involved in drug trafficking, police said.
