Pattaya City has given the green light for an 11-kilometre monorail line, which will connect the Thap Phraya intersection on the city’s west side with Nong Mai Kaen in the east.
During the final public hearing for the proposed Purple Line monorail system on Wednesday, attendees approved the design, blueprint, and environmental impact study for the second phase of the project. The meeting was led by Phutthaset Charoenphat, director of the city’s traffic and transport division.
The feasibility study indicates that, despite the high construction and maintenance costs, the monorail is the most suitable option for Pattaya due to its minimal structural footprint.
The monorail system is expected to facilitate future urban development, according to the study.
The Purple Line, which will connect the Thap Phraya Intersection to Nong Mai Kaen in the Nong Prue subdistrict of Bang Lamung District, will be built in two phases. The route will include 12 stations spaced between 800 and 1,000 meters apart, covering Nong Mai Kaen Road, Phon Prapha Nimit Road, Pattaya Klang Road, and Pattaya Sai 3 Road, before ending at the Thap Phraya Intersection.
City Hall plans to expropriate 635 land plots, totaling 64 rai, within the construction zone, affecting at least 461 buildings.
The city aims to use a public-private partnership model for funding the monorail system, with construction anticipated to begin in 2027.
