According to the Ministry of Public Health’s most recent ministerial directives, the general of the Royal Thai Police officially disclosed that anyone found in possession of 10 units or less of methamphetamine will be classified as a drug user rather than a distributor.
The Criminal Code of 2021 states that drug users are victims who should get rehabilitation as opposed to facing legal action or lengthy prison terms.
But Pol. Lt. Gen. Panurat expressed his worries about the new standards, saying that having ten units or less of illegal substances will encourage more local drug dealers because they could carry ten methamphetamine pills without being charged with drug distribution.
As a result, after setting the new requirements, there would be a chance that the number of neighborhood drug traffickers would rise.
According to Pol. Lt. Gen. Panurat, there should only be five illegal narcotics that can be in one’s possession. Numerous elements will need to be integrated with all government parties in the future, as well as taken into account from the perspectives of law enforcement and medicine.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Panurat went on to say that a special operation was planned to enroll drug users in a rehabilitation program in an effort to reduce the likelihood of violence in the community, after an urgent directive from Thai Prime Minister Mr. Srettha Thavisin.
Furthermore, Srettha made public the names of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Nakhon Phanom as drug trafficking hotspots that required tight regulation. Monitoring drug smuggling would be far more effective with international collaboration from surrounding nations, according to Pol. Lt. Gen. Panurat.
