meth seized after car chase

A fleeing drug courier was arrested, and approximately 4 million methamphetamine pills were seized following an overnight car chase in Mae Ai district on Tuesday night.

Soldiers had set up a road checkpoint in Tambon Mon Pin of Fang district that evening, acting on intelligence that smugglers would transport a consignment of drugs from the Myanmar border. At around 8:40 p.m., they signaled a pickup truck with Chiang Mai plates to stop. Instead, the driver sped off towards Mae Ai, prompting troops from the Narcotics Drug and Chemical Substance Control Unit of the Northern border (Taskforce 35) to give chase.

At about 11:30 p.m., the troops intercepted and stopped the pickup truck on Highway 1089 at Kavila village in Mae Ai district, according to Gen. Narit Thawonwong, commander of Taskforce 35.

The driver, Jakha Ja-ou, 40, a native of Chiang Mai’s Chai Prakan district, was arrested after 20 packages containing a total of 4 million meth pills were discovered inside the truck. The suspect is being held for legal action, and the investigation is ongoing.
