Man leaps from roof ‘to escape police for growing cannabis plants’

A man was filmed jumping from a roof in an apparent attempt to escape arrest for growing as many as 70 cannabis plants.

He plummeted from the top of a two-floor house in Walsall, West Midlands yesterday morning – forcing a police officer to rush out the way.

His shocking fall was captured on footage by student Arviee Arrowsmith, who said she thought the man was ‘off his head’ for making such a daring escape bid.

She said he heard he was under arrest as he lay face down on the hot pavement and ‘screamed’ for an ambulance, with passers-by offering water to cool him down.

Neighbour Arviee said: ‘I was sitting on my bed and I heard a lot of commotion, so I got up to look out the window and there was a man on the roof and two police officers down below.

‘I just pulled my phone out and as soon as I started recording the video he slipped straight down and made a right bang and crashed through the guttering.

‘Then around seven other police officers came running around from the back of the building.

‘I just remember thinking “He’s off his head”.

‘He tried to stand back up but he fell straight back down. He screamed for an ambulance and a male officer ran towards him shouting for him to stay down.

‘He remained laying on the floor face-first and residents were bringing bottles of water out to cool the man down as he was laying on hot pavement.

‘They told him he was under arrest while he was on the floor, but he was taken away in the back of an ambulance 45 minutes later. An air ambulance also circled but it didn’t land.’

A police spokesman said: ‘We acted on intelligence and discovered around 70 cannabis plants at an address in High Street, Bloxwich, just after 11.30am on July 22.

‘During a search of the property, a man inside the premises climbed onto the roof and fell.

‘He has been taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

‘He has been arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis and will be questioned when considered medically fit.’
