A key player for Liverpool is reportedly on track to leave the club next summer, according to a prominent journalist.
After a relatively quiet start to the summer transfer window, Liverpool was active toward the end, securing deals for Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa before the deadline. Several significant players, including Fabio Carvalho, Thiago Alcantara, and Joel Matip, also departed the Reds over the summer.
Now, a new report indicates that Liverpool anticipates another key player will exit next year. Athletic journalist James Pearce has stated that goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to leave Anfield next summer.
During the Walk On podcast, Pearce commented, “He’s a Premier League-quality goalkeeper, so it baffles me that there wasn’t a more significant battle for his signature. For Liverpool, it was a no-brainer to keep him; selling Kelleher for £7 million plus a backup goalkeeper you don’t want would have made no sense.”
With Mamardashvili set to return from his loan at Valencia at the end of the season, it appears that selling Kelleher next summer aligns with the club’s future plans. Kelleher himself has indicated a desire for more playing time, expressing his ambitions while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.
In a press conference on Tuesday, Kelleher said, “I’ve made it clear over the years that I want to go somewhere and be a number one. The club’s decision to sign a goalkeeper (Mamardashvili) suggests they are going in a different direction. Liverpool have also rejected several bids. It’s not always in my hands to make the decision. My ambition is clear: I know I’m good enough, and I want to play week in and week out.”
