Liam Roberts Receives Six-Match Ban for Challenge on Mateta

Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts has been handed a six-match ban following his reckless challenge on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, which resulted in the latter being hospitalized.

Roberts received a straight red card after his high boot caused significant injury to Mateta, who required 25 stitches in his left ear. The incident occurred during last Saturday’s FA Cup fifth-round match at Selhurst Park, prompting Palace chairman Steve Parish to label it “the most reckless challenge I’ve ever seen.”

The Football Association (FA) sought to extend Roberts’ punishment from the standard three-match ban, arguing that it was “clearly insufficient” for the offense. The independent regulatory panel confirmed the six-match suspension on Friday. Millwall expressed disappointment with the outcome but acknowledged the process.

Roberts stated he is “devastated” by the incident and reached out to Mateta “immediately” after the game. He accepted the red card and acknowledged his punishment, while expressing concern over misleading articles that have led to threats against him and his family. “I have never stepped onto a football pitch with the intention of hurting anyone,” he said, thanking those in the football community who supported him during this challenging time.

The FA will release a written explanation soon detailing the reasons for the increased ban.

Palace Hopeful for Mateta’s Recovery

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is optimistic about Mateta’s recovery from his injury in time for their FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham at the end of the month. Glasner noted that Mateta is recovering well and has not suffered any fractures or concussion.

“He will travel to Marbella with us next week for individual training,” Glasner said, expressing hope that Mateta will be available for the match. He confirmed that the team has largely moved past the unsettling incident from the Millwall game, focusing on their upcoming match against Ipswich.

“JP’s mother came over from France to care for him, and he’s in the best hands. He will be back with us soon,” Glasner added.
