One  killed, two injured in explosion

This morning (Saturday), a roadside bomb explosion thought to have been remotely detonated by rebels occurred in the unrest-ridden southern province of Yala, killing one paramilitary ranger and injuring two others.

A small paramilitary team, commanded by Sgt. Wichien Panyo, was on normal foot patrol along a curvy side road with dense vegetation on both sides at around 7am, according to Bannang Sata district police.

Near a big tree in the woods where they had placed an improvised explosive device (IED), insurgents may have been waiting in wait. The gadget burst as the patrol approached the tree.

All three of the patrolmen were hurt by the blast’s force, and they were all taken by reinforcements who quickly arrived on the scene to the district hospital.

At the hospital, one of the injured was eventually declared dead.

Unauthorized traffic on the route was stopped so an explosive ordnance disposal squad could search the area for further IEDs.

According to the police, the IED that exploded weighted between 10 and 20 kg.
