Jose Mourinho has once again aimed a sharp remark at his former club Tottenham Hotspur during a press conference for his new role at Turkish side Fenerbahce.
Now 61 years old, Mourinho is preparing for his first season as head coach of Fenerbahce, where expectations are high given his storied history of success across various clubs. When questioned about his previous qualifications in European competitions, Mourinho candidly admitted that he had forgotten one of his former clubs. Unsurprisingly, that club was Tottenham. “I forgot about Tottenham,” the ex-Spurs manager stated.
Mourinho, who faced disappointment after being sacked by Tottenham just days before the League Cup final in April 2021, has not shied away from taking jabs at the club since his departure.
In a 2022 interview with Sky Sports, he revealed his frustration over the manner in which Tottenham treated him: “I am at a stage in my career and life where I don’t harbor bad feelings; I just try to accept things as they are. Yes, it hurt.”
He spoke humorously about his experience with English journalists, referencing his time qualifying for the UEFA Conference League final and reflecting on the unusual circumstances of his tenure at Spurs. “I hope not to be sacked this time, because it’s something that doesn’t happen to too many coaches,” he remarked.
Mourinho acknowledged that while he has no regrets and wishes well for many people connected to Tottenham, he found the way he was treated to be odd given his accomplishments. “There are lots of nice people in Tottenham, and I wish them the best. Even to Mr. Levy. But for someone with my career and history, it was a strange occurrence. But in the end, it opened the door for me to be in Rome, and I’m very happy to be there.”
He concluded by expressing his desire to be in a competitive position again, stating, “Of course, I would love to be in a position fighting to win titles or in the Champions League, where I have played 160 or 170 games.”
